Finding great snowboarding gear might seem easy if you live within an hour or so of a resort. But the thing with walking into a store is you are limited to the options they have at that point in time, can’t compare prices, or you possibly miss out on deep discounts from competing stores.
This is why I always prefer to start my search for gear online. I find better deals. I don’t have to spend time going from store to store because they don’t have what I want. And let’s not talk about having to deal with being stuck in traffic or finding parking.
Here are my favorite spots for buying snowboard gear online:
Retailer | Best for | Return Policy |
Tactics Boardshop | Accessing the biggest range of specialized snowboard and skate accessories. | Full refund within 60 days of purchase if you are not 100% satisfied. |
Sun & Ski Sports | Specialized accessories like GoPro mounts, helmet speakers, and car racks. | 90 days from your date of purchase for items in good condition. |
Evo | Getting expert help to find the right gear that works together. | Up to one year for a new, unused item. |
GearTrade | Finding hidden deals and unique finds on used gear. | 14-day policy for items in the same condition, with a $4 restocking fee; original shipping is not refunded. |
Decathlon | Affordable, beginner-friendly gear, especially in Europe and Canada. | Within 30 days for non-members and up to one year for members. |
Let’s explore each store in detail…
Table of Contents
#1. Tactics Boardshop: Best For a Wide Range of Snowboard and Skating Gear
Shipping:
- You get free shipping if you meet a minimum order amount
- There are options for expedited shipping with FedEx and UPS
- Some international shipping options with DHL
Warranty:
- If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can get a refund within 60 days
Return Policy:
- If you aren’t 100% satisfied, you can return for a full refund within 60 days of purchase
Since 1999, Tactics Boardshop has offered specialized snowboard and skate gear. It really shows too; they have boards, boots, bindings, clothing, goggles, helmets, body protection, packs and bags, and other accessories like tuning and waxing kits, stickers, stomp pads, and snowboard tools.
As a company that specializes in boards, snowboards for the winter season, and skateboards for the summer, they also have a bunch of featured brands that are bound to fit whatever your personal preferences are, like:
- Vans
- Burton (that’s what all my gear is)
- Capita
- Ride
- Union
- K2 (ok I also have a pair of K2 boots because I love the warmers)
- Volcom
- 686
They actually have one of the most impressive collections of snowboard gear that I’ve ever seen online. I can check out snowboard jackets and pants, gloves and mitts, base layers, face protection, snowboard socks, tech apparel, my split board accessories, and all the replacement tools I need to tune and wax my own board. Something I learned to do during the pandemic when all the tuning shops were closed. Totally worth it, by the way, especially if you board on a bunch of different mountains or in different conditions. Now I don’t really have to worry if I nick a rock on the way down because it was 50 degrees with blown snow.
You’ll find a lot of different sales, especially if it’s your first time buying there. But be advised, you basically have to be stateside to take advantage of their good shipping.
They have a lot of good shipping options, but unlike many of the other places to buy snowboard gear online, they don’t offer APO shipping according to their website; sorry to all of you active duty who are deployed/PCSed and looking to spend your hazard pay before you get home.
#2. Sun & Ski Sports: Best For Specialized Accessories
Shipping:
- You get free shipping within the U.S. if you spend $75 or more
- They offer FedEx shipping for Express Saver, two-day, and overnight at an extra fee
- They ship to APO via FedEx
- No international or expedited Saturday deliveries
Warranty:
- If the item you purchase doesn’t meet your needs or has any type of defect, you can exchange it for something that is better suited within 90 days, based on manufacturer warranties
Return Policy:
- 90 days from your date of purchase for items in good condition
Another great option is Sun & Ski Sports. They stock a ton of great names like Burton, Patagonia, and The North Face. If you don’t know what it is you need for your snowboard gear, they can help you with a live chat function or a phone number. At best, most other competitors only offer a chat function, so it’s nice to be able to speak to someone over the phone.
When you check out their website you’ll see they have things like GoPro accessories so you can film yourself going down the mountain, snowboard packages if you want to start from scratch instead of buying piecemeal, boot bags, hand and foot warmers, helmet speakers, and car racks. So, they don’t quite have the same range of accessories as Tactics; however, they absolutely kill it when it comes to the things Tactics doesn’t have, like GoPro mounts, helmet speakers, and car racks.
They have a low price guarantee, so if you find a lower total price from a qualified retailer within 10 days of making your purchase, they match it.
Sun & Ski also has a lifetime discount, so if you buy your gear from them you can qualify for things like free lifetime snowboard waxing services. Dope.
#3. EVO: Best For Getting Expert Help When Shopping
Shipping:
- You get free economy shipping if you spend at least $50
- International shipping for some brands at a price
- You can ship to an Evo store
- They ship to APO/FPO addresses
Warranty:
- Each new item you purchase comes with an original manufacturer’s warranty
Return Policy:
- Up to one year if you have a new, unused item
A pretty big leader among snowboards, Evo has ski, snowboard, skate, surf, bike, and surf stuff. So you get a lot of brands and a wide array of options, but slightly less specialty than Tactics. They are available in the US and Canada (and Japan) with physical store locations if you want to try things on and membership rewards that you can apply.
If you aren’t sure about a product or what it is you need, you can use their chat function to talk to a gear expert, which is pretty cool, especially if you want to make sure that all of your snowboard gear works together.
Fun tip: If you happen to have a store nearby, they offer services like tuning at certain locations. And even if you don’t, they’ve got a lot of detailed guides on stuff like finding the right boots and bindings.
#4. GearTrade: Best For Finding Hidden Deals on Used Gear
Shipping:
- Free shipping on all orders over $100 unless it’s an oversized item
- For orders below $100, you’ll see your shipping charge during checkout
Warranty:
- Manufacturer warranties are usually only valid for the original purchaser who bought the item from an authorized retailer.
Return Policy:
- 14-day return policy with no questions asked, so long as the item is in the same condition in which it was sent
- Item is subject to a $3.99 restocking fee
- Original shipping charge is not refunded
If you are looking to buy used outdoor gear, GearTrade is your Ebay for snowboarders. They even have lots of extra sales throughout the year, so you can apply coupons to bring down your costs. They offer ski gear, snowboards, mountain bikes, hiking, and camping stuff with a lot of really good name brands.
The issue is it’s used.
Now, I’m not saying don’t buy used stuff, I’m just saying that it will be hit or miss whether you find something that you can actually use. I, for example, found a set of K2 battery-powered heated boots. I honestly didn’t even know that they were heated until I found the USB port on the back of the boot. They were owned by someone for a single season who obviously didn’t really like snowboarding because they wore them twice and then sold them. Okay, so now my feet are never cold, but it is unlikely I will get that lucky again with lightly used, sizing, and function.
Other than that, I like what they are offering, except with the return policy. It’s a brutally short 14-day return policy, the shortest you’ll find when it comes to buying online snowboard gear, and they don’t reimburse the original shipping fee if you paid one. Plus, you get charged a $3.99 restocking fee.
#5. Decathlon: Best For Affordable Beginner-Friendly Gear
Shipping:
- You get free economy shipping if you spend a certain amount (based on location)
- International shipping for some brands at a price
- You can ship to a Decathlon store
Warranty:
- Each new item you purchase comes with an original manufacturer’s warranty
Return Policy:
- Within 30 days for non-members and one year for members
I am adding Decathlon here, but with some asterisks. I love this store. It is my absolute favorite European brand for affordable outdoor gear.
If you are just getting started with a new outdoor sport, you want specialized stuff that really works, but doesn’t break the bank, especially if you are trying to flesh out everything you need for your first snowboarding resort trip.
My caveat is that their offerings are different depending on where you are. They are mostly a European brand, so if you are in the UK, you might find a wide range of snowboards at affordable rates, as well as other gear.
They’ve been operating in Canada and the United States for about seven years now, but often don’t have the same range of offerings as the other online retailers. So, when looking to buy snowboard gear online from Decathlon, I would recommend you have a backup option.
Now, if you decide to go ahead and buy from them, be advised that they don’t have specialty support if you have questions about the products you are trying to buy. They also have an incredibly outdated return policy and platform, so you’ll end up having support tickets with lots of back-and-forth emails before you finally get something returned.
Summing It All Up
There are a lot of great places to buy snowboard gear online, and it’s really down to what it is you’re looking for, any quirky preferences you might have, and how knowledgeable you are. Here’s how I would summarize the five stores:
- If you want the biggest range of accessories, Tactics is your store.
- If your focus is on specialized accessories like hand and foot warmers, helmet speakers, or GoPro mounts, go with Sun & Ski Sports.
- If you like really cheap, beginner stuff, and you are in Europe or Canada, check out Decathlon.
- If you want used gear that might have hidden finds, check out GearTrade.
- If you want help finding the right gear, Evo specialists are standing by.
